The Basic Life Support (CPR/AED) Provider Course is designed to train healthcare professionals to recognize several life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR, use an AED, and relieve choking in a safe, timely and effective manner. The course is intended for healthcare professionals and healthcare students with clinical responsibilities (see intended audience below).
BLS Providers meets the current ECC 2015 and the current American Heart Association standards for Healthcare Provider CPR and AED. It covers CPR and AED for Adults, Children, and Infants.
This course takes approximately 3.5 hours to complete.
This course is intended for healthcare providers with clinical responsibilities including nurses, physicians, paramedics, emergency medical technicians, respiratory therapists, physical and occupational therapists, physician's assistants, residents or fellows, medical or nursing students in training, lifeguards, police officers, and other allied health personnel.
There are no prerequisites for this course.
Successful completion of this course results in an American Heart Association BLS Provider certification card which is valid for 2 years from the date of the course.
The 2010 "BLS for Healthcare Providers" course was renamed to "BLS Provider" with the 2015 update. These are equivalent courses.
The American Heart Association does not provide Continuing Medical Education (CME/CEU) hours for instructor-led BLS Provider courses. If you need CME, please complete the Heartcode BLS training by clicking here.
A pocket mask and a two-year American Heart Association BLS Provider certification eCard are included in this course.
The BLS Provider student manual is required for this course and is sold separately. If you already own one or have access to one before, during, and after the class, you do not need to purchase one during registration.
An open book written exam and skills test are completed as part of this program. Proficient demonstration of CPR skills and a score of 84% or higher on the written examination is required for certification. Students not successful with these exams will be remediated and allowed an additional attempt to test the same day.
