The American Heart Association Basic ECG and Pharmacology course provides healthcare providers with an introduction to reading electrocardiograms, recognizing lethal arrhythmias, and understanding the medications commonly used for advanced life support measures. This course serves as an optional pre-course for the AHA Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) training.

The American Heart Association’s ECG and Pharmacology covers:
- Basic arrhythmias
- Basic electrophysiology
- Heart anatomy
- Normal ECG measurements
- Basic ACLS drugs and usage
- Drugs, doses and routes of administration during cardiovascular emergencies
- Integrating basic drug pharmacology into ACLS algorithms
This course is intended for healthcare providers with clinical responsibilities in critical care areas including nurses, physicians, paramedics, respiratory therapists, physician’s assistants, residents or fellows, and medical or nursing students in training.
It is a recommended preparatory course for Advanced Cardiac Life Support training.
Participants receive a certificate of completion for this course.
The American Heart Association ECG and Pharmacology student workbook and certificate of completion are included in this course.
A written exam is completed at the end of this program. A score of 84% or higher on the written examination is required for successful completion. Students that do not achieve this score will be remediated and allowed an additional attempt to test.
