Accelerated EMT Course Description

Code One’s 180 hour Accelerated EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) program prepares participants to respond to medical emergencies in just 5 weeks. EMTs respond to emergency 911 calls, assess ill and injured individuals, administer life saving interventions, and transport patients to hospital Emergency Departments aboard ambulances for further treatment. This exciting and demanding course covers human anatomy and physiology, treatment of sick and injured individuals, and transportation of these patients to the hospital.

Our course curriculum involves interactive lectures, hands-on practical training, and 20 hours of clinical observation time in a variety of settings including onboard ambulances and in hospital emergency departments. Code One’s instructors are experienced EMS professionals that bring real-world situations into the classroom. A blend of hands-on practice and interactive lectures prepare Code One EMT students for certification testing and to work as an EMS provider.

Code One’s success is proven – our student pass rates exceed national and state averages and many of our graduates work and volunteer for many EMS services throughout the country including as firefighters, police officers, military, and federal agents. Many Code One grads have continued their education and are now paramedics and nurses.

Accelerated EMT Participant Requirements

Students must be 16 years of age or older by the end of the course in order to become certified in Connecticut and 18 years or older to become Nationally Registered (not required for CT Certification).

Students convicted of a felony may not be eligible for certification as an Emergency Medical Technician.

Students must maintain a score of 75% or higher in this course to sit for the course final written and practical skills exams.  Participants with less than 75% averages during the program will be counseled by their instructor and may be dismissed from the course if their average remains below 75%.

Students that successfully complete both testing phases will be eligible to test for National Registry written and practical examinations for EMT certification.

Participants must be in good health and able to perform the physical duties of an EMT.  Some clinical sites require students to provide a certification of health signed by a physician, a negative Tuberculin Skin Test or Chest X-Ray within 1 year prior to the start of clinical, and a history of vaccinations. Any specific requirements for clinical sites will be presented on the first day of class and due by the midterm.

NREMT and Connecticut EMT Certification

Upon completion of the EMT program participants must successfully complete psychomotor (practical) and cognitive (written) examinations to obtain certification.  Participants successful with testing will be issued NREMT certification (participants 18+) which may be used to obtain EMT certification in most states.  Code One’s EMT programs are approved for Connecticut EMT certification for all participants ages 16+.  If transferring an EMT certification to another state, please contact your local Office of Emergency Medical Services.

The practical examination is a six station skills test that is conducted Wednesday evenings at Code One’s East Hartford center. This examination is administered by the State of Connecticut Office of Emergency Medical Services. Candidates will rotate through all stations performing medical and trauma assessments, extremity and spinal immobilization, CPR/AED, and airway management. Participants must pass all six stations to complete the practical examination and may repeat stations unlimited times within three years of course completion until all stations are passed (however, each station may only be attempted once per exam). Code One students use the same equipment in class that they will eventually be tested on and are required to be patients at a practical examination during their course.

The written exam is administered by appointment at any Pearson Vue Testing Centers. This computer based test arrives at a pass/fail result based upon the candidate’s ability to answer a varying number of questions derived from the EMT competency areas.

Once both examinations are completed, participants will be issued registration from the National Registry of EMTs, if over 18 years of age, and certification from the Connecticut Office of Emergency Medical Services for all participants.  Participants that are 16 or 17 years old upon program completion will need to submit an Age Waiver to the Office of Emergency Medical Services signed by a parent or guardian.
