Learn How to Control Severe Bleeding with Stop the Bleed

The ACS Stop the Bleed class is designed to teach anyone techniques to stop life-threatening bleeding, whether as a result of natural disasters, man-made disasters, or other accidents. The class includes online coursework followed by a 30-minute skills training appointment. 

During your training, you’ll learn about the three methods of bleeding control through video demonstrations, interactive learning, and spontaneous quizzes. You’ll receive a Stop the Bleed certificate upon successful completion of the online training and in-person skills session.

Stop the Bleed covers three main techniques

In this course, you’ll become comfortable performing three quick techniques to help save a life before someone bleeds out. You’ll learn how to:

  • Apply pressure to a wound with your hands
  • Pack a wound to control bleeding
  • Correctly apply a tourniquet

What is Stop the Bleed?

Stop the Bleed is an emergency preparedness course designed by the American College Surgeons for anyone in the general public. This course empowers everyday people to administer life-saving first aid for victims of natural disasters, gunshots, or other injuries where bleeding out is a risk.

What will I learn in a Stop the Bleed course?

In a Stop the Bleed class, you’ll learn three techniques to help save a life before someone bleeds out: 

  1. How to use your hands to apply pressure to a wound 
  2. How to pack a wound to control bleeding 
  3. How to correctly apply a tourniquet

When and where are in-person skills appointments offered?

Most Code One Training Centers accept appointments Monday through Saturday from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, though the exact hours of operation may vary by location. Code One has over 100 locations, which offer the Heartsaver skills sessions by appointment.

Do I need to complete an online course before scheduling a Stop the Bleed skills session?

Yes. There is an online training course which must be completed prior to scheduling your skills appointment. Instructions for accessing the online course will be emailed to you upon registration.

Can I bring a friend or family member to my in-person skills session?

Yes. A second registered participant who has also completed the online portion of the Stop the Bleed training may attend the skills appointment with you. You can add a second learner to your appointment during scheduling.

How long does it take to complete the Stop the Bleed training?

The online coursework runs about 25 minutes, and learners typically take about 30 minutes to complete the in-person skills session.

What does the in-person skills session look like?

Once you arrive for your scheduled appointment to a Code One Training Center location, check in using the instructions in your confirmation email. You’ll receive a phone call with the door code for entry, which will allow you access to a private room with CPR manikins and a TV screen. You’ll connect virtually to your CPR coach, who will train you on Stop the Bleed and support you throughout your hands-on skills session.
