FAQ
What is BLS Provider?
BLS Provider is a hybrid training course designed by the American Heart Association for healthcare providers who need to learn or refresh their basic life support skills.
Code One Offers BLS training through a Self Guided Learning™ program, where learners complete online coursework through the HeartCode® online learning module, and then come to a nearby center for an individual hands-on skills assessment appointment. Appointments are offered Monday through Saturday between 8:00 AM and 8:00 PM across 100+ locations, so you can come when it’s convenient for you.
Is BLS Provider approved by the American Heart Association (AHA)?
Yes. BLS Provider is an approved American Heart Association program that results in a two year American Heart Association BLS eCard for healthcare providers.
Is the BLS eCard the same thing as the AHA BLS certification?
Yes. After successfully completing BLS training with any American Heart Association provider, learners will receive either a physical Course Completion Card or an emailed eCard. These two cards have been colloquially referred to as “BLS certification” or “American Heart Association certification”. While the American Heart Association does not use the term certification, you can be confident that the AHA eCard you earn at Code One fulfills your CPR training requirement.
When are BLS Provider skills appointments offered?
Most Code One Training Centers accept appointments Monday through Saturday from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, though the exact hours of operation may vary by location. Code One has over 100 locations, which offer the BLS Provider skills sessions by appointment.
See our list of locations here.
Do I need to complete the HeartCode® online BLS course before scheduling a BLS Provider skills session?
Yes. We require that the HeartCode® online BLS training course be completed before you schedule the BLS hand-on skills session to ensure that you are familiar with the material and ready for your appointment.
What’s the difference between a full BLS Provider Training course and BLS Provider Skills Only?
BLS Provider Training includes the required HeartCode® online BLS course plus a Hands-On Skills Verification appointment at Code One. This is the course that most learners require.
BLS Provider Skills Only is just the BLS hands-on skills portion of the BLS Provider course, and is restricted to learners who have already completed the American Heart Association HeartCode® online BLS training course and have their certificate dated in the past year.
Both the HeartCode® online BLS course and the hands-on skills session are required to earn your eCard, even if you are renewing.
How long does it take to complete the Basic Life Support Provider course?
The BLS Provider Complete Package includes theory (HeartCode® online BLS course) and skills verification (BLS Provider Skills).
The HeartCode® online BLS training course takes about 1-4 hours, depending on your previous knowledge, competency, and confidence. Since HeartCode® is an adaptive learning platform, it will adapt to your learning needs: If you find yourself benefiting from a more robust learning process, the platform will shift to incorporate more videos, examples, and practice opportunities to help you understand. If you’re an experienced healthcare provider, the platform will adjust to focus on knowledge verification.
The hands-on skills session is scheduled for one hour to ensure learners have adequate time to complete all skills, though the average time taken to complete the assessment is closer to 45 minutes. Experienced rescuers may complete the skills more quickly.
All together, the Basic Life Support Provider course runs between 2-5 hours, depending on your proficiency and experience levels.
What is the HeartCode® online BLS course?
The HeartCode® online BLS course is the American Heart Association’s theory portion of the Basic Life Support training for healthcare providers. The HeartCode® online BLS training course can be completed at home and on your own time. The course is adaptive and will adjust content based on the prior knowledge of the learner. It will cover topics including:
- Single-rescuer CPR
- Two-rescuer CPR
- Use of a bag mask device
- Use of an AED
- Child and infant CPR
- Special rescue considerations
In order to meet BLS Provider eCard requirements, learners are required to complete both the Heartcode® online BLS training and the hands-on skills session.
BLS Provider Training includes the Heartcode online BLS course and the individual skills appointment at a Code One Training Center location.
What does a BLS Provider Skills session look like?
During your BLS hands-on skills session you will independently perform skills on a CPR Verification Station™ learning center which provide real-time feedback to help you master compressions and ventilations for both adults and infants. Our team will remotely supervise and will be available to assist if needed, but you will have your session without ongoing assistance from an instructor.
Your BLS hands-on skills session includes 6 skills:
- Adult compressions
- Adult ventilations
- Two-rescuer adult CPR
- Infant compressions
- Infant ventilations
- Two-rescuer infant CPR
Can I complete my BLS, ACLS, and PALS training at the same skills session?
Yes. Code One’s Healthcare Provider Bundle Package allows you to complete the online portion of the HeartCode online BLS, ACLS, and PALS courses, and then come in for a single skills appointment to cover skills for all three programs.
