Kim Ruether lifted her son’s eyelid and saw his still, dilated pupil staring at the ceiling as he lay on a stretcher in a northwestern Alberta hospital hallway a decade ago.
She says she didn’t need a doctor to tell her the boy was dead.
“I just looked at his little face and I thought, ‘How could this big, beautiful 16-year-old boy be in this situation?”‘ she says.

October is Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness month and we’re encouraging everyone to locate and register AEDs. By doing so you’re helping to build a network of life-saving devices that could mean the difference between life and death for someone suffering a cardiac arrest.
There are prizes for individuals and communities that register AEDs, so spread the word! We’ve created a bunch of pics, posts and other resources to make that easy!

Manipal Hospital hosted ‘Mission 3K – 3000 Hearts, One Beat’, a relay-style Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) event that broke the existing Guinness World Record for the most CPR performances in a single day. Each participant in ‘Mission 3K – 3000 Hearts, One Beat’ was required to perform 60 chest compressions, with less than 0.5 seconds allowed for transitions between individuals. The event, held at Manipal Hospital Old Airport Road, ran continuously over 24 hours.
A Harford County mother is sharing her story of her son’s loss in order to raise awareness of sudden cardiac arrest. As Patrice Bullock demonstrates CPR and how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED), she knows that those two tools could help save a life if someone goes into sudden cardiac arrest.

October 1, 2024 — CHELMSFORD, Mass. — To mark the kick-off of Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month this October, ZOLL Medical, an Asahi Kasei company that manufactures medical devices and related software solutions, is teaming up with professional football player Damar Hamlin to announce Anything Can Happen. Anyone Can Help.™ —a new national public awareness initiative to communicate that AEDs, like fire extinguishers, are essential, life-saving tools whose visual and audio instructions empower anyone to help save a life in an emergency, and should be readily accessible in every community.
AEDs are critical to improving OHCA survival rates, but their availability and accessibility is likely to significantly impact their effectiveness. We conducted a scoping review to identify literature concerning the impact of additional security, specifically locked cabinets, on AED accessibility and effectiveness. We identified a paucity of research examining this issue, with most studies published as conference abstracts or letters to the Editor, and thus were not peer-reviewed and provided limited information on methods. The ten included studies examined a broad range of outcomes, including rates of theft and vandalism, harm to rescuers and accessibility. No study compared the impact of locked versus unlocked cabinets on patient outcomes, and none of the included studies mentioned that some AEDs may have been taken for use in emergencies and not returned.

Rollout will deploy more than 100 automatic external defibrillators across University-owned properties
The Office of Emergency Management is tripling the presence of automatic external defibrillators—known as AEDs—at Boston College through a campus-wide project that began last fall. The rollout of AEDs, which will deploy more than 100 devices to most University-owned properties, is scheduled for completion by the end of the semester.
AEDs are designed to analyze the heart rhythm and deliver an electric shock to victims of ventricular fibrillation to restore rhythm to normal. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a study found that administering an AED during a cardiac arrest increases survival rate by 70 percent.
A group of UMass Chan Medical School students provided hands-only CPR and AED training to nearly 50 parishioners at St. Anne Parish in Southborough last week, as part of a pilot partnership with the Diocese of Worcester.
The program, “Sabato’s Life Savers,” is named after the late Joseph Sabato, MD’79, associate professor of emergency medicine and a passionate advocate for teaching CPR, who died in July.
