2025 EMT Recertification Steps for Virginia

Virginia utilizes the National Registry of EMTs (NREMT) National Continued Competency Program (NCCP) for all levels of EMS providers.

Virginia EMS Providers must obtain NREMT certification for their initial certification but are not required to maintain NREMT to maintain Virginia certification.

EMS providers do not need to complete any additional education requirements to renew their state certification beyond the NCCP required hours.

All continuing education (CE) programs in Virginia must be announced by a Virginia certified Education Coordinator in order for it to be eligible for submission to the Virginia Office of EMS for subsequent recordation of continuing education hours for recertification. (Regulations: 12VAC-31-1405, 12VAC-31-1423, 12VAC-31-1427).

Submission of CE records must be either electronic or via paper CE bubble cards (Regulation: 12VAC-31-1437).
