Does a Connecticut EMS Provider need to maintain their NREMT certification?

Connecticut EMS providers at the EMR, EMT, Advanced EMT, and Paramedic levels who received their initial certification after January 1, 2020 are required to maintain certification with the NREMT for their Connecticut certification to remain active.

An OEMS memo on the transition from the original state renewal process to the NCCR process dated September 16, 2019 states:

Effective January 1, 2020, all persons who earn NREMT certification should maintain such NREMT certification throughout the life of their Connecticut certification. Those persons who did not hold NREMT certification may continue to maintain Connecticut certification alone.

State of Connecticut Office of Emergency Medical Services

EMS Providers who received certification prior to 2020 may have been initially certified by the NREMT but can maintain Connecticut only certification if their NREMT has lapsed.

Re-entry to the NREMT – the process to receive NREMT certification after it has expired – is relatively straight forward. We describe the steps to take in this article.
