New Jersey EMS RECERTIFICATION GUIDE

Does New Jersey follow the NREMT’S NCCP Model?

No, New Jersey does not follow the NREMT NCCP Model. While New Jersey requires initial EMTS to obtain NREMT certification as an entry-level requirement, EMTs are not required to recertify their NREMT but will renew their New Jersey EMT license through New Jersey based continuing education.

The state of New Jersey requires license renewal every 3 years by the last day of the month in either June or December based on the date of initial certification. New Jersey also requires 24 elective CEU’s, 3 refreshers A, B, and C for a total of 48 CEUs (conducted in a classroom by NJ certified EMT instructors). More information on the recertification process for EMTS can be found on New Jersey’s OEMS Bulletin Board

Does Code One’s online NREMT recertification course cover the CE’s required by New Jersey?

If you are looking to renew your NREMT then we can help.  Code One has partnered with Pro EMS Center for Medics to deliver Prodigy – a world class virtual training platform for all levels of EMS providers which is approved by CAPCE. Courses that are CAPCE approved count hour for hour in the indicated category. Please note that New Jersey does NOT follow the NCCP model and as such ONLY accepts NJ based continuing education courses for state Licensure. A listing of approved NJ certification and refresher courses can be found here

Should I renew my NREMT certification even though NJ does not require it?

Many EMTs choose to renew their NREMT certification. While not required in some states, those who plan to move out of state at some point would benefit greatly by having an active NREMT certification that they can use to apply for a state licensure.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

CAN I COMPLETE MY CONTINUING EDUCATION ONLINE?

Yes. Code One’s Online EMT Recertification course provides continuing education hours in a flexible virtual format. Participants complete a combination of scheduled live courses in a virtual conference room and distributive pre-recorded courses which may be completed at any time.

BUT WHAT ABOUT THE LIMITS ON DISTRIBUTIVE EDUCATION?

EMT Recertification limits distributive education (pre-recorded) course hours. Virtual instructor-led training (VILT) courses are conducted in real-time via webinar and are approved in the F5 category by the NREMT. There is no limit for hours that can be obtained through VILT.

Live courses are scheduled on weekdays from 10am to 6pm with five courses offered per day. There are additional evening and Saturday sessions scheduled during February and March. Most classes are one hour in length.

IF I RENEW MY NREMT CERTIFICATION, DO I STILL NEED TO GET A STATE CERTIFICATION?

EMTs need a state certification to practice. The EMT can easily submit their updated NREMT certification through the state licensing portal to obtain updated state EMT certification which can be found
